What Causes Breakthrough Bleeding While Treating Leukaemia?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: Hi. I'm 31 years old and 12 years ago I had leukemia. The last period I had was 11 years ago and I was told a year or so after that I had gone through early menopause due to the chemo and total body radiation.
Last month I had a 5 day period, there was bright blood but mostly brown discharge, i then had 2 blood tests 2 weeks apart and the results were "normal". I have an ultrasound booked in 2 weeks also. I am now currently having the same bleeding and it started exactly 30 days after the last one started.
Could my periods be coming back after the leukaemia treatment?
I'm really confused

Brief Answer:
Secondary amenorrhea followed by reoccurence of menstruation

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. At age of 31 with leukemia history, i would say you had secondary amenorrhea phase and not menopause. And these 30 days apart bleeding episodes with normal reports is likely the return of menstruation and nothing else. However no harm in getting evaluated further by ObGyn and let them sort it out. To me these look like menses.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Brief Answer:
Possibilities need to be sorted out

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for geting back to me

After total body irradiation, one may start ovulation sometimes, its less likely but possible. But with your mentioning of HRT, it may be just the hormonal imbalance that might have led to this bleeding episode . Also not every bleeding menses mean you ovulated. There are anovulatory cycles as well. Talk to your ObGyn and let them decide what it is.

I hope it helps.
