What Causes Constipation Post Kidney Cyst Removal?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: Hi, my brother had a suspicious 3cm cyst removed from his left kidney five days ago. The cyst was near the centre of the kidney and was removed carefully by an experienced urology surgeon and the rest of the kidney was retained. He is taking OxyContin for pain and has been taking coloxyl and senna for the constipation. He hasn't defecated in three days. He is not really in much pain anymore so stopped taking the OxyContin just today. Can he expect bowel movements soon? Don't want him to be too constipated as the straining might cause him pain or not be good after surgery. Can he take movicol? Is it ok to take after kidney surgery in terms of does it affect kidney function in any way?

Brief Answer:
He can take stool softener like Softovac or Naturolax .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query.Your brother has developed constipation after surgery of removing kidney cyst .

It is common to get constipation after most of the abdominal surgery and is mostly due to immobilization during post operative period and partly due to impaired bowel movements (Peristalsis).

Normally bowels regain peristalsis after 72 hours that relieves constipation
..
You can mobilize him and give any stool softener like Softovac (Isabgol) or Naturolax granules twice daily .

If he fails to get motion you can give him enema to evacuate his large bowels.

Ensure he drinks more water this helps to soften the feces (Stools)

This will not have any ill effect on kidney surgery.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Ok is that a fibre supplement? We have one called metamucil here.. Is that ok? You wouldn't recommend movicol?
