Brief Answer:
It can be constipation as well as obstruction.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

How often do you have constipation? Do you have any bloating, cramping? Any blood in stool? Weight lost?

Please note that at your age (over 50) it is important to rule out colon cancer in case of stool problems. What you have now can be just a constipation or bowels obstruction due to some obstacle in large intestine.

Bowels obstruction usually gives bloating, cramps, nausea and gas obstruction.

Constipation does not cause cramps and gas can be passed freely. Constipation can be caused by hypothyroidism, medicines (hypertension mostly), bad diet (low fiber intake) and lack of physical activity.

If you are sure this is just a constipation, please start fiber intake and get some laxatives.
And even if the stool will pass, you should get scheduled for colonoscopy.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
