What Causes Drooling While Sleeping?

default
Posted on Sat, 30 May 2015
Question: I am drooling while sleeping. I wake up and my shirt and pillow are damp. I had open heart surgery on March 17 but this occurred before the surgery as well as after. It doesn't occur every night but most and usually during the last hours of sleep.

Brief Answer:
allergies, snoring

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
This could occur due to allergies or obstructions causing snoring. Whenever the mouth is open for a prolonged time during sleep drooling is possible. Try taking an non-sedating antihistamine like loratadine and using some nasal saline spray before bed and see if this helps. If you are snoring a lot you may need a sleep study to make sure you do not have sleep apnea, expecially if you are experiencing a lot of daytime fatigue.
I hope you find the answer soon,
Regards
