What Causes Numbness In Leg Post Injury?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Jun 2015
Question: Hi,

Yesterday, my shoe broke and I fell hard on my knees, my left knee primarily - on the cement sidewalk. The entire front of my leg - from above my knee to lower shin is numb and swollen. I had pants on but I skinned my left knee. I can't feel the pain since everything is numb. I do feel pain bending my knee after standing or straightening my leg after sitting. I had out of town visitors so was not able to rest as much as I would have liked. I tried some cold and heat therapy last night and the swelling was less when I woke up this morning but seems worse than ever now - with a greater area of numbness - after a full day of walking and driving. I changed the bandage but don't see any obvious sign of infection. Should I be concerned? Should I use ice or heat? Keep my leg up? Should I go to work tomorrow?

Brief Answer:
Contused knee.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Yours is the case of contused knee.

Numbness results from contusion of soft tissue such as muscles, nerves.

In my opinion, the situation worsened by continued physical activity.

You need 3 or 4 days of rest, 48 first hours is recommended ice, leg above body (trunk) level and NSAID ( Ibprofen 400 mg x 3 for a couple of days eg.)

I don't think skinned area is a concern.

If symptoms persist after 4 to 5 days, or you notice swelling of the knee, you should consult your primary care Doctor.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions feel free to ask, if not, you can close the conversation and rate the answer.

Wishing you good health.
