What Causes Severe Fatigue And Hypersomnia?

default
Posted on Sat, 21 May 2016
Question: Hello,
Thank you for considering my question.
My husband has been struggling for at least the last 2 years with oversleeping. I would say that on average he will sleep all day and almost all night for 1 week a month. Our business suffers because of this, and there is very little balance. At times, he will have to work excessively and often he burns himself out, saying that he hates his job. He has his business running out of a large office in our home and he is only accountable to himself as a small business owner. About a year ago, I quickly arranged for him to see a psychiatric nurse. She prescribed welbutrin and a medicene for the thyroid (his blood work showed an underactive thyroid). Since then he will often miss doses and today he is sleeping again. I am worried about our situation. I am a stay at home mom with a 2 year old and often I don't know how to handle this. Thank you for considering my query.

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to note your husband's medical problems.

Make sure his thyroid is well regulated ie his TSH is around 0.5 to 2.5

When I see someone like your husband in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your 3 month glucose average)
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH
Free T4
Anti Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibodies
Anti Thyroglobulin antibodies
25 hydroxy Vitamin D None of these tests require any fasting and can be done at any time of the day
