What Causes Sudden Drop Of A1C Level From 7.5 To 5.9 In An Elderly Person With Variegate Porphyria?

Question: I went to the doctor the other day and we were both shocked to learn that my A1C was 5.9, down from six months ago 7.5. The only thing I could think it could be is that I have been taking choline bitartrate/inositol 250 mg/250 mg twice a day. The only problem is that I have noticed a slight shortness of breath, and my throat feels tight. I do have more energy (wonderful!) and most people think I remember much more than I should and much more than they who are my age do. The only problem I have is recalling info quickly. I remember in stages, one letter at a time or by listening mentally to a replay of movies, conversations, if that makes any sense to you. I am seventy-four years old and still teach school. My question is pertaining to the fact that I was born with variegate porphyria, which has caused critical situations when I have had surgery, two units of blood, and always anesthesia problems - last time in ICU for three days and seven weeks before I totally woke up from the anesthesia, from Nov. 13 to the week of Dec. 28. Is any part of the choline bitartrate/inositol two tabs daily going to create a problem for me?

I have completely reviewed your health query, and can well realize all those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will give extend my expertise to solve the problems.

The only bad impact Choline bitartrate/Inositol may have is the dosage. I never recommend 2 tablets per day for you. It causes such issues in elderly especially with higher dosages. Start taking it 1Tab/day and you will feel better. Rest of the issues discussed in history are all natural and age related. You are seasoned on the bough, no doubt sir, but the reflexes dcreases with age and is normal. Cognitive capabilities also get diminished with age, so it is normal and natural course of the brain and body senility. I appreciate the capabilities you still have and teaching at this age, with less off from work even being the oldest staff member. It is appreciable to have such a maintenance of health. HbA1c, I will preferably suggest that you should repeat the test as this may be an issue with the results as to taking your daily control of blood sugar levels this much ideal HbA1c is usually misfits. If repeat test is same, then enjoy the good days with controlled sugar levels.

Answer to your other question: Yes people of the same same lineage may have different forms and manifestations of the disease. It is not only the genetics that play its role, the environmental factors and a lot more lifestyle impacts are also counted towards the overall outcome of the diseases. So patterns change.
