Question: Hi, My son had his 18mth vaccinations three weeks ago. A week later his neck was majorly swollen after his normal daytime sleep. I took him straight to the dr who sent us to the hospital. The Dr at the hospital said he had a reaction to his vaccination of the live vaccine associated with the mumps virus and to take him home. The next day he was worse (lethargic, pale, swallowing hard and constantly). We went back to the paediatrician from the hospital who admitted us. Ultrasounds showed it was not the mumps virus but very enlarged (3cm) lymph nodes on both sides of his neck. Blood tests had indicated toxic high levels of white blood cells and neutrophils (reactive) his crp was 168, EBV negative. They started him on a course of antibiotics and sent us home the next day with oral antibiotics. 3 days later his nodes reduced in size but still visually swollen compared to normal. We continued the antibiotics which finished yesterday morning, but the night before he had a temp (38.7) which I gave Panafon for and monitored what was slow but a decrease in temp. 3 hours later he was 37 and woke in a lather of sweat. I monitored his temp every hour yesterday which appeared to remain normal, other than getting toward the lower end 35.4) at one stage, the sweats at another (36) and a moderately higher temp (37.4) at one other stage. I am very worried about him. My nephew has just been put into remission for leukaemia (ALL) and my mother has on hodgkins. I asked the Dr on Wednesday if he would redo the bloods but he didn't see necessary. I am not happy with not knowing and am very anxious about the whole thing. Do you have any idea what it could be or suggestions of what to do?
