Brief Answer:
MRI , in consut with an orthopedic doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

If the knee is swollen and there is associated restriction of movement, swelling and tenderness then an MRI of the knee can be advised. The lump on the side of the knee would also be clearly visible on the MRI. Aspiration of joint fluid can be done to look for the possibility of septic arthritis. NSAIDs, local ice, bengay or voltral emulgel can be continued for the time being. Ideally an orthopedic surgeon should examine the knee and the lump before going for the relevant workup. Treatment would depend upon the cause.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
