What Causes Swollen Ankles?

Question: My husband has swollen ankles and has had them for several weeks. He doesn't think it is anything to worry about, but I don't agree. In addition, he has been falling asleep in the evenings within an hour or so after he gets home from work. He will fall asleep while talking to me or while eating. I'm very concerned. He is 55 years old and we've been together for over 30 years so I know this is not like him. Please give advice. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Hello. This could be a low thyroid problem
Detailed Answer:
Hello. There are several concerns here. First, swollen ankles could be either a sign of congestive heart failure or a liver or kidney problem, but considering the sleeping pattern he has, it could be from a low functioning thyroid gland. The other consideration would be sleep apnea that, even if he thinks he sleeps soundly through the night, could disrupt his REM sleep and make him sleepy during the day.
He needs to see a doctor, and, if it were me, I would get a cardiac evaluation, blood work, and consider a sleep study to evaluate the symptoms you've given me.
Please let me know if you need any more information
