What Does Deep Purple Colored Bruise On Leg After A Fall Indicate?

Question: I have polycythemia vera. Want to ask a hematologist. I fell a week and a half ago and pulled my left hamstring and fell on one knee. the entire back and inside of the leg has been solidly deep purple. it seems to be functioning a little better but the deep color is still there. I am going to go in and get a blood test tomorrow for the red blood cells etc...but I dont understand the mechanism for why if you have polycythemia it is of concern...do your blood cells increase? platelets etc in response to injury and therefore more prone to blood clots? Thanks

Brief Answer:
CONTUSION OF THE LEG

Detailed Answer:
DEAR XXXX,
THANKS FOR POSING THIS QUESTION .

DUE TO THE FALL THERE HAS BEEN CRUSH OF YOUR HAMSTRINGS, AND DUE TO CRUSH THERE IS OOZING OF SEROUS FLUID WITH RED BLOOD CELLS . SINCE YOU ARE HAVING POLYCYTHEMIA THERE IS CONTENT OF HIGH HEMOGLOBIN IN IT WHICH GIVES RISE TO PURPLE COLOUR TO THE LEG. INCREASE NO. OF PLATELETS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

IN POLYCYTHEMIA, THERE IS INCREASED VISCOSITY OF THE BLOOD GIVING RISE TO DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS LIKE HEADACHE, OR BLURRED VISION AND IN THE LONG RUN DAMAGE TO THE ORGANS IF THE HEMOGLOBIN LEVEL IS NOT MAINTAINED. YOU MUST BE NOTICING THAT THIS COLOR MUST BE SLOWLY FADING AND WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME IT WILL BE COMPLETELY NORMAL. HOWEVER YOU SHOULD GET YOUR CBC DONE AND IF HEMATOCRIT IS BEYOND RANGE IT NEEDS TO BE CONTROLLED.

TRULY,
DR. J.TICKU
