What Does My MCU Test Report Indicate?

Question: My son who is 14 years old has problem in passing urine but he always clear his bladder. Doctor prescribed him many tests like ultrasound, uroflowmetry and MCU. In MCU it showed that there is kinking of the catheter at the distal bulbar urethra/bulbo penile junction with focal narrowing however contrast is seen beyond this narrowing in MCU study - likely partial stricture. The doctor who prescribed these test advised that we should go for Cystoscopy as my son has probably narrow urethra. We consulted another doctor and he prescribed Tablet Veltam 0.2 at bedtime and said that right now there is no need to go for cystoscopy and 1st take this tablet and if there is no affect then only we will go for cystoscopy. I want to know what is the good option, going directly for cystoscopy or first taking table veltam. Is this tablet good for children of 14 years.
Brief Answer:
Choose between invasive procedure or side effect.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM
I am Dr Rakesh Sharma answering your query.
I can understand your concern.
Cystoscopy is an invasive procedure. So few doctors do try all available conservative methods.
But it is going to be difficult to choose between these two, as there is a long list of side effects, of veltum,
Postural hypotension, dizziness , malaise, headache, rhinitis, pharyngitis, cough, sinusitis, diarrhoea, nausea, and other infections.
Please discuss these things with your doctor and then decide.
It is always good for a treating doctor to take a decision than we do.
Hope you have answer to your query, if any thing else you are welcome.
Good luck.

I am thankful to your for your kind advice but when doctors are agreeing that there is a kink and urethra tube is narrow from front then why this different treatment method. The other doctor does say that cystoscopy would be advisable if tablets have no effect. I have been given to understand that for narrow urethra tube dilation needs to be done and no medication can help, is it correct. I think in end I would go for cystoscopy on tuesday. But is it safe and have no long term adverse effects.
Brief Answer:
Cystoscopy is safe and sound.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
The different treatment methods come from experience of doctors .
There are times when we doctors can not directly go for invasive procedures, because of certain reasons like age, condition of the patients or patients unwillingness to go for surgery.
Then we try different methods, some click some does not.
Your decision of going for cystoscopy is good under the circumstances.
In my first answer I had to tell you pros and cons of both.
Cystoscopy is very safe and sound procedure, and there are no side effects.
Hope I have answered your query.
