Question: Hi Doctor,

My son is 5 years boy suffered with stomach pain on 18th July, 2016. Initially we thought, because of constipation (from 15th-18th did not go stool). Later we visited hospital, there 1st suggested whole abdominal scan (Report: Right Kidney 8.8 X 3.8 CM & Left Kidney 7.4 X 2.6 CM Mild hydronephrosis in the right kidney with dilation of the upper ureter. Mid & Lower ureter obscured by bowel gas) Later Dr taken Xray for stones(Report: Normal) After that suggested to take CT Scan (Serum Cretane Report: 0.6). For 2nd opinion went to another hospital, there Dr. suggested CUE (Report: Normal) gave appointment for MCUG on 21st July.

Sir, Please suggest me weather i have to go with MCUG test & is this test safe ?
Please guide me..

Thanks XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
MCUG is comparatively safe study

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

Unilateral hydronephrosis is commonly due to vesticoureteric reflux that is reflux of urine back from the bladder to the ureter(mostly due to urinary infection), some obstruction at the junction of bladder and ureter(due to ureterocele)or due to ureteric stone.
Ureteric stone has been ruled out by CT scan. MCUG is micturating cystourethrogram in which a contrast is introduced into the bladder through a catheter and films are taken.
The main complication of MCUG is urinary tract infection.Other very less common complication is hypersensitivity to contrast agent.
I would suggest you to go for the MCUG to find out the cause of hydronephrosis.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more query.
