Brief Answer:
Calcified granuloma is the most likely cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your mother's symptoms and CT scan report.

I agree that calcified granuloma is the cause of fits in her. Calcified granuloma represents an old infection of tapeworm, where the worm has died and got calcified. This is also called as healed neurocysticercosis.

This is not a serious issue and does not lead to any other problems (than fits and headache).

We need to continue giving her anti-epileptic medications to prevent fits in future.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Brief Answer:
Seen the MRI reports.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I have noted the additional symptoms, HIV positive state and MRI brain reports.

In this, there are two findings:

1. Brain atrophy- means shrinkage of brain tissue, which happens as one increases in age, and it can not be reversed or stopped (happens in everyone).

2. Signal change in left brachium pontis- this refers to an abnormality in the left side of brain, which could be related to HIV infection. ART treatment should be continued.

Further follow up and repeat MRI brain after 3-6 months would be able to confirm the diagnosis.

Best wishes,

You mean to say we have to wait and watch but continuing the ART medicine? Any medicine for current situation or any precautions to take? Will these situation can cause a big damage? Pls answer few more questions to decrease my level of anxiety. Thanks

Brief Answer:
You need to continue the ART.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Yes, you are correct. Your mother needs to continue the ART. Repeat scan would be needed to look for progression or improvement of brain lesions (disease).

As of now, it is not a big damage, it is a small problem.

No special precautions are needed.

What consequences can be happened in near future if problem may prolong ahead? Do we have to be prepared for any brain surgery? Or any big loss in sense of individual loss. What about a cough which has been non curable? Any relation with current physical situation of patient?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Depends on the disease progression.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for getting back.

The future consequences would depend on the extent of disease progression. This may include forgetfulness, difficulty in walking, etc. It is difficult to predict the exact disability, as progression differs in different people.

Surgery is not needed for this condition.

Cough is unrelated and needs to be evaluated by the physician.
