2 Year Old With Constant Running Nose. Not Responding To Allergy Medication. Due To Adenoid Problems? Premature Baby

I am curious if adenoid problems can cause a very constant runny nose in a toddler (age 2) or possibly be the cause of problems with speech. My 2-year-old has had a constantly runny nose since the day she was born. Allergy medication seems to have no effect, and she's already had a battery of standard allergy tests (for typical food and environmental allergies) which came back negative for all allergens. She also seems to have some speech delays (she is 2 and 2 months and still isn't really talking. She was a preemie, so only now that she has turned 2 is it becoming a concern. She seems to understand everything we say, but when she tries to say words or repeat words we're saying, all of her words seem to be missing the consonants. I had my adnoids removed when I was 6 because of major hearing loss. I am wondering if her speech issues might be similar or related. Is this a possibility for either of the problems I've described?

Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Snoring, mouth breathing, nasal voice, cough, repeated ear and sinus infection are all the symptoms of enlarged infected adenoids. Enlarged adenoids causes block of eustachian tube and that's why repeated ear infection occur. Sinus infection is the reason for your daughter's nasal congestion and running nose.

Infection of adenoids result in 'drip' that irritates the vocal cord causing a lot of cough which you think as allergic origin and treating her with anti allergic drugs. They are not effective because they are only symptomatic and they don't cure when the cause for running nose is not allergy but infection.

Speech problem is because adenoids causes nasal twang or nasal voice and that is the reason for indecipherable speech. Dry mouth and protruded teeth may add to the difficulty in speech. She is having difficulty because her adenoids are large and so the best option for her is surgical removal of adenoids.

Some children are born with enlarged adenoids . It is unclear if there is a genetic preponderance. They grow to their maximum size around 5 years and regress by 7 years. But in your daughter's case, since it is troublesome you can opt for removal. Please visit an ENT specialist and get his/her opinion regarding the removal.

I hope this is useful to you.
