Burning Sensation In Mouth And Throat With Difficulty In Swallowing. Ulcerative Colitis, Taking Gupisone
Hi , my father was taking gupisone 20mg for 1 week then tapering 5 mg every week, he was taking this medicine for the ulcerative colitis. Now the symptoms of colitis have reduced but he has a burning sensation in the entire mouth and throat with difficulty in swallowing. Could this be due to the gupisone he took. Would appreciate your advice.
Gupisone is a good medication for any inflammatory process. It is an steroid so it should be taken for certain conditions with specific dose and length of treatment. Whille this medication is effective in areas with swelling, it also lowers the patients immune system in the process such that opportunistic bacteria, virus or fungi would defeat our body's defenses. In this case, oral thrush most commonly due to a weak fungus causes this painful condition in the oral cavity. It is a common side effect in patients taking this kind of medication. There are over the counter medicines for this. You may give us your feedback if symptoms persist.
Thank you.
Dr. Eric
