Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can I Increase The Dosage Of Tramadol And Meloxicam To Manage The Increased Osteoarthritis Pain In Thumbs And Wrists?
I am taking Tramadol 50 mg and Meloxicam 15 mg.I also take Glucosamine Chondroitin Triple Strength. I was taking the Tramadol and Glucosamine 2x daily at 8am and 8pm and the Meloxicam 1x daily at 8am for Osteoarthritis in my thumbs. My right thumb especially was starting to heart more and more and it seemed as if the Tramadol wasn't working like before. I have been on the medicines close to a year. My Dr has said I can take it 3x a day now every 8 hours. Can I take it more often than every 8 hours. Like every 4 or 6hrs at work. At work I have a job where I am repeatively using my thumbs to take pants off pants hangers requiring the use of both thumbs to release the pants from the hangers and I am also a cashier. By the end of my work day my thumbs are really hurting and am getting spasms in my right thumb and lower wrist area.
It is still topic of debate that any medication can prevent or treat arthritis. Meloxicam and tramadol are pain killer tablets and they are not effective in treating arthritis. In your situation I would like you to try hot water, local ointment. If still your thumb is hurting than you can get an steroid injection in thumb. This will provide pain relief for long duration. Remember taking Meloxicam for long time can harm your kidney.
