Hello Dr, gud evening! I am 7 weeks pregnant and my doctor has prescribed me gestin 5mg three times a day as i had irregular periods for past 6 months. ( my period got irregular after i stopped the birth control pill). I was on melmet 500mg once a day for past two months. I got conceived naturally. I would like to know whether this gestin dosage is ok ? And what if my body is already producing enough progestetone? Kindly advice. P.S : 4 years back i had my first pregnancy and had to terminate in less than two months. Does this have any effect on my current pregnancy ?
Hi, Thanks for the query. Gestin contains allylestrenol. It is a progesterone. Progesterone usually helps in maintainance of pregnancy and in preventing miscarriage. There are different types of progesterones. Allylestrenol belongs to category C drugs in pregnancy according to FDA. Means animal studies have shown some adverse effects on fetus but sufficient human studies are lacking. So, this can be used when the benefits overweight the risks. Better to use natural micronized progesterones as per as possible. Miscarriage before few years may not have effect on present pregnancy. But better to be careful and continue with regular antenatal checkups and ultrasound examinations. Take care.
