Can Barium Block Water And Nutrition Form Getting To The Body If Not Passed Through?
I want to know if barium can block water and nutrition from getting to the body through the bowel if it is left in there and has not passed through. My mother who is 90 and has gastroperisis still has barium in what looks like all of her large bowel. I saw the x-ray and it was all lightened up like a christmas tree. I am very worried about her. Her bun is quite hight and even though she is on IV fluid her bun is in the 50 s. They never gave her a laxative to get it out of her before she left the hospital and now we are back and things don t look good.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your 90 year old mother having retained barium in the colon and in spite of her being on intravenous fluids the BUN is raised to 50 and things do not look good. The possible causes of her increased BUN can be kidney disease and not the barium that has retained in the large bowel. Hence take a opinion of a Nephrologist and go for relevant further investigations and proper treatment. Also ask for soap-saline enema to clear the large bowel off the barium. She will be fine then.
