Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse a few months ago, I also have a hiatal hernia and Gerd and mostly around ovulation or my period I get severe anxiety, like a nervous ball in my chest almost on verge of a panic attack. At night is the worst, when I lay down and try to fall asleep, It feels like my heart skips a beat and I wake up having to take a deep breath. I take Zoloft for anxiety that the dr prescribed me before MVP was diagnosed. I dont know if this is symptoms from MVP or of gets because they seem to go hand in hand for me. Can gets or hiatal hernia cause palpitations? I am a 33 year old female and all my problems started after my second child 8 years ago. So confused about my symptoms.
hello and thanks for contacting us -you need to understand few things about mitral valve prolapse (MVP) -palpitations can be a symptom of MVP, and in the absence of mitral regurgitation(MR,leakage in mitral valve) it is harmless -the problems of MVP are due to mitral valve leakage -so please tell us about the degree of mitral regurgitation in your case. -the symptoms you are describing appears to be due to premature ventricular contraction , which again are harmless in the absence of significant MR -more over your symptoms are also contributed by anxiety disorder -so my advice will be- get a repeat echo for MR assessment, and if no significant MR, things are favourable
