Can Ibuprofen Cause Bloating And Swelling In Stomach?
My boyfriend and I were in a car accident 3 weeks ago tomorrow. He has 3 broken ribs. He was prescribed Ibuprofen and was off of it in about a week. He has been complaining alot lately about being bloated and swollen in the belly. He saw a doctor last week and she said in was the pills. Is it really so or should he see someone just in case?
I am sorry to hear about the condition of your boyfriend.
Ibuprofen is a powerful painkiller. However, prolonged use of Ibuprofen has an adverse effect on the GI system of the body (stomach).
It is known to cause hyperacidity, which causes bloating sensation and burning in abdomen. If not stopped and continued for several weeks, it might lead to stomach ulcers as well.
My advice would be to take an antacid or Omeprazole/Pantoprazole along with Ibuprofen as it will reduce the acidity.
If the pain is bearable, he might as well reduce/stop Ibuprofen dose.
Hope this information helps.
Wishing him a speedy recovery. With warm regards, Dr. Sridhar Reddy
