Can Type I Diabetes Patient Produce Insulin?

Can a type one diabetic all of a sudden start producing insulin? My son is 10 and was diagnosed at 4....so we are not new to diabetes. He had his insulin for breakfast at 7am...he dropped low by 1030 am then ate lunch without any insulin. His blood sugar was 247 at 1pm and by 5 pm he had dropped back down to 42. This is the first time this has happened. Any suggestions?

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

There are several possbile causes for this. i will list them out. You need to see which may be the possible cause.

There is a possibility that the insulin is being administered im/iv accidentally instead of subcutaneous root. So make sure about that.

Make sure that his eating pattern remains the same. Has his appetite reduced.

Check that the insulin used and the syringe are of the same strength and mixture.

Check his creatinine levels. Sometimes when the creatinine rises, the need for insulin reduces. So check creatinine out too.

There is ofcourse something called as the honey moon phase where the pancreas start secreting some insulin before failing completely.

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above so i can be of help further. Best of luck.
