Child Breathes With Mouth, Snores Loudly, Has Large Tonsils. Should We Consider Operating Them?

I am considering getting my daughter s tonsils and adenoids removed? She is 6 years old and is a mouth breather, loud snorer and restless sleeper. Her tonsils are big, but not huge. I am just wondering if she will grow into her tonsils and adenoids (which we assume are also large) or if I should have them removed so she can sleep soundly.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello

at 6 years , one would expect some level of adenoidal enlargement
Add to that tonsillar hypertrophy , and the snoring you hear is understandable. It is also fairly common
Some things to keep in mind are
1. Has she been on any medical treatment
2. How much is it affecting her quality of life ( is she drowsy in the day or dull)
3. Is she having tonsillar infections ( throat pain )
4. Is she losing weight , or not growing as per her age

If she has not been on any medication ( e.g. steroidal nasal sprays ) , that should be the first step

If she is having the above symptoms ( and not subsiding with medicines )
-- surgery should seriously be considered
