hi I m a doctor and my son (6 mnths old) got 3 URTI in past 45 days. This week he got URTI with cough becuase i was infected from a collegue. and his symptoms were increasing day by day..The pediatrician prescribed cepdem xp, suspension. i am worried that is safe to give it in a 6 mnths old. please inform me about the use of antibiotics in infants or toddlers. when to give n when to avoid
Hi, Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic. Cepodem-XP can be given safely to a 6 months old infant with upper respiratory tract infection. The use of this antibiotic is in bacterial infections such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, middle ear infections, and other respiratory infections. If infection looks like viral, for simple cold and cough without fever, antibiotic is to be avoided. Hope I have answered your query. Regards.
Thanks for writing to health care magic. I can understand your concern.
Majority of cases of respiratory infections are because of viral infections. If it is a viral infection antibiotics have no role. In bacterial infections we may have to use antibiotics. So first a confirmation of bacterial infection is to be made and then antibiotics are to be started.
Continue to ask further queries as required. Hope this helps. Take care. Dr Y V Siva Sankara Murty M.D.(Pediatrics) Associate Professor of Pediatrics
