Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having numerous, runny stools with mucus. Before each bowel movement there is cramping and then chills. I have been on two rounds of antibiotics since March. I have lost 15 pounds since the end of March. A recent colonoscopy showed diverticulitis. I am taking Dicyclomine four times a day. I fear eating anything knowing the pain and runny stool will follow. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi, Diverticulitis occurs when diverticula (pouches in your gastrointestinal tract) become inflamed. Mild cases of diverticulitis can be treated with rest, changes in your diet and antibiotics. But serious cases of diverticulitis may require surgery. The most common symptoms of diverticulitis are- abdominal pain diarrhea constipation bloating change in bowel habits fever bleeding
Treatment for diverticulitis depends on the severity of your symptoms, so you maybe hospitalized depending the opinion of your doctor. In mild cases, you will be allowed to stay at home but advised to increase fluid and fiber intake as well as being prescribed some antibiotics.
From what you've said you are a mild case, so stick with the antibiotics and take the full dosage, there should be an improvement in your condition soon. And as I mentioned earlier increase fluid and fiber intake.
I hope this answered your question.
