Constipation, Pink Discharge. Normal PAP Smear. Stopped Progesterone Pill. Reason?
Hi
I have been constipated for a few days now, and the last toilet visit involved some straining. When wiping I noticed very pale pink discharge on the paper, in fact it was hardly noticeable. I had a normal Pap smear and hpv clear test done 3 months ago. I came off progesterone only pill in February and so far my periods have been regular. At present I think I am possibly ovulating as my last period ended around two weeks ago. The reason I am asking is that I had an abnormal smear in oct 2012 and it had thrown me in panic mode
Straining due to constipation can lead to trauma to the mucosa of the anal canal. This can lead to bleeding and hence pink colored discharge. An examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract can be done. In addition, stool softeners can be taken to avoid constipation and hence straining. Besides stool softeners, dietary modifications like taking plenty of fluids, and fibers in diet help to relieve constipation. An abnormal Pap test can revert back to normal. This is seen in CIN I and CIN II lesions where the atypical changes revert back to normal. Continue with your routine Pap tests at regular intervals.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
