Diabetes. Pain In Joints, Muscles In Wrist, Shoulder, Ankles. Prescribed Anti Inflammatories For Pain In Hips. Thoughts?

Hi, i am 26 yrs old and have lived with Diabetes for 25 years. I am on an insulin pump. Over the last five years I have stared to develop pains mainly in my joints but some times its in the muscles too. I have went to the doctors about 3 years ago as the pain was particularly bad in my hips. I was given anti inflamatories and sent away. Over the years the pain has moved form my hips although its still there to me wrists, shoulders occasionally my back and sometimes my ankles. I am very pro self managment and believe I have tried everything I can but now need some more help. Do you have any ideas what my pain may mean or why it is happening? Thanks Lucy

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

Joint pains in young can be due to autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, inflammatory diseases like SLE, bursitis, fibromyalgia, etc.
To pinpoint the diagnosis, complete physical examination and investigations like complete blood counts, ESR, RA factor, CRP, serum uric acid, serum creatinine, X-ray and MRI joints from a rheumatologist are needed.
You might need disease modifying agents and oral steroids to take care of the symptoms. You need to consult a rheumatologist for proper treatment.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
