Difficulty In Sleeping, Shortness Of Breath While Lying Down. Taking Nexium. Measures To Improve?
Have a hard time sleeping. When I'm already deep in sleep, I will be suddenly awaken by the feeling of drowning, then there is the constant burping. I'm taking nexium for my acid reflux but lately I find that whenever I'm lying down, I have shortness of breath (like I'm drowning) followed by burping/belching. How can this be resolve so I can have a good sleep

hello friend,
shortness of breath when lying down can be a symptom of congestive heart failure. I would recommend if you feel like your are drowning, that you consult a physician because this is a serious condition. You also may have sleep apnea. if you have leg swelling, or shortness of breath with exertion, these are also concerning symptoms. Several tests and physical exam findings, and we'll come up with a right diagnosis. This is not just a quality of life issue but a medical problem. This is probably not related to your reflux. Cheers.
Hi there, thanks for asking. Every person who has gasping for air in sleep should be checked for sleep apnea. Gastric reflux is another problem is seen in apnea (because of change in pressure in the chest and esophagus during sleep, acid comes back and also burping induces). The most probable thing is apnea, and your doctor can see if there is any other issues and if apnea exists. Losing weight ( 20 kg at least) can help for apnea for people who want to prevent it rather than treat it. I wish you a good health.
