Does The Head Injury Need Further Medical Attention?

Hello, I have a 6yr old boy that was hit in back of head w. a basketball by a adult sized strong male teenage councilor in camp today, he is a little guy in every way and the impact caused him to fall face first and hit cement, appears chin took most of the impact and knee's took some impact based on busing and we were told he possibly hit head is defiantly red in a blotchy pattern but no bruising, scrapes or visible sign of impact. Gums around bottom row bleed for some time after easing in severity with time, i think, slight bloody nose (not heavy flow, stoped on own) but, gums still bleeding slightly around two front teeth not flowing just new blood signs pooling around teeth - some hours later, chin is visibly swollen and bruised from bottom front chunk to neck line in a "v" pattern with the smallest part of "v" at neck bend. child was immediately taken to paediatrician and told to give Morton and ice. this happened at 12N, and he is clearly still swollen and is deff. speaking odd where you can see he is trying not to move much, claims he feels OK, but will say anything not to go back to DR. and has history of saying he is OK when he is visibly sick which poses the concern to be in question more. His bottom row front teeth are OK (they are all new) but gums are still lightly bleeding. since incident child had been quiet and not very active. We are concerned that there may be possible fracture...??? or is that possible/likely or not?? and what the other possibility's of damage and or infections or other contraindications that may be a result of this incident. History on child - Very bad winter with infection, would consider to be more "sickly" than the average child. has key tones in urine 2 times since January, hospitalized 1st time treated for dehydration, picks up any/every germ under the sun, history of high fevers w. out reason - Pediatrician response: "virus", innocent heart mummer detected 21/2 yrs ago as possible result of contracting the "H1N1 virus" at very beginning of public outbreak and currently under the care of immunologist awaiting immunology blood results and pending genetic testing awaiting approval from our ins. company to see if there is "underlying" or "genetic" cause of frequent illness and high fevers, and unknown cause of key tone elevation. Child also has constant dark circles under eyes, sometimes worse than other, sometimes better. He had high sugar levels that were further tested fasting and non fasting and now found to be normal ruling out key tonic state due to adolescent or pre-diabetes. Other wise, on the outside looks like a extremely handsome, beautiful and healthy little boy outside of today's incident. Child is also in 25 percentile but purported w. height and weight. 35-37LB height is 37 or so inch. With that being said... Concern at hand, is if we should take him for x-ray of the chin area if there is poss. concern of fractured jaw or bones in chin. Being the child will not tell us how he is really feeling its very difficult for us to determine if we should give time, ice and pain reveler as advised or take for an X-ray. Also child is in camp, we are keeping home tomorrow but do we continue to keep home for any duration or send. Child attends activity camp 3 days a week and surf camp 2 days a week. Fri is surf camp do we let attend if just bruised and no fracture or is this something he should be on bed rest for. Would appreciate Any and all advise and comments that are offered. Thank you very much!!!!

Hi. You give a full description of your son's history and also his injuries sustained. I do not think his history has any impact in his acute injuries. You ask the question as to whether he may have fractured anything. If he is struggling to open his mouth or move his jaw, then I would suggest he needs an XRay of either his mandibles or else an OPG view (depending on who would be viewing the films). If his teeth are wobbly, he should see his dentist. If his jaw movements are ok then I would take some reassurance from this.
