Experiencing Whoosing Sound In Ears. Doctor Said Ear Canal Was Small. Is It Serious?

For the past couple of months, I have been experiencing a "whooshing" (like an ultrasound of baby's heartbeat) in my ears (both) off and on, most often when lay down, and lately when I stand up. I also have a full feeling in my right ear (somewhat in my left, but prominently in my right) and the right ear sometimes hurts. I have seen an ENT and my hearing is fine. He checked my ears and said the right canal was small. He ordered an MRI and the nurse called and said that the blood vessel was close to right ear and that could explain the sound in the right ear -- when I told her it was both ears, she said she would have to leave him a note. I have not heard back. I am concerned because it has been going on for a while, getting progressively worse.

Hello,
Thanks for writing to HCM
Hearing Whooshing sound can be because of--
Hypertension - To rule out get your Blood pressure checked.
Perforation in ear drum-- i think this is not there as your ENT doctor must have told you.
Wax in ears --i think this is not there as your ENT doctor must have told you.
Active Otosclerosis-- In this disease there is new bone formation. this can be ruled out by Pure Tone Audiometry, and other tests like Impedance Audiometry.
A swelling made of blood vessels in middle ear--this can be seen in contrast images of MRI or T2 images of MRI
Hearing loss--If you have a hearing loss then this can occur. It cam be measured by Pure Tone Audiometry(hearing test)
You can discuss with your doctor and get the above tests done.
I have given you some of the diagnosis which could be there. You can rule out them,if they are not there then you may write back to us anytime.
Get well soon.
