Having Diarrhea & Nausea. Loud Sounds From Lower Abdomen. On Flagyl 3x. Seeing No Improvements. Cause And Treatment?

I have had alternating bouts of diarrhea wit nausea (never vomit, though) and constipation for 2 weeks or so. The diarrhea is always immediately preceded by loud gurgling sounds from my lower abdomen so I know to run to the bathroom when it starts. I am 6 days into a course of antibiotics (Flagyl 3x daily) and have seen no improvement in my symptoms. I have lost over 15 pounds since this began despite making sure to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. I am planning to go see my family doctor again, but would like to know what I can expect the next steps to be. I am a 41 year old Caucasian male, non smoker, and have maybe 1 drink every couple of weeks.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Every diarrhea which lasts for more than 48 hours needs to be investigated. The reason of your diarrhea can be bacterial infection but it can be also partial bowels obstruction, pancreas disease.

That is why visiting your doctor once again is a very good idea. You should have some diagnostics. Blood work, ions level, bilirubin, liver tests, amylase, urine amylase, urine analysis, stool tests, stool culture test and FOBT (fecal occult blood test). Abdominal ultrasound and abdominal X-ray should be also done. Next step should be colonoscopy and if nothing will be found, abdominal CT with oral contrast (enteroclysis) should be also done.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
