Having Dizziness For 4 Months. Normal Test Results. What Could Be This?

Hello , I have had dizziness for 4 months now,the best way I can describe it is like a hangover, I've seen a doctor had blood work and cat scan, all were fine, I don't know what to do anymore. I'm scared , it's very depressing to feel this way all the time , I still manage to go to work but it is hard, can this be a sign of something serious although my test were fine.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

I suppose you have been having dizziness from 4 months and are alarmed because your blood tests and CT scan have come as normal.

Dizziness is a symptom related to many medical conditions.
Blood tests usually are done to see for any anemic condition or any low blood glucose state.
CT scan is done to see for causes within the brain (including the cerebellum).

If your blood tests and CT scan are normal, the cause of your dizziness stemming from the inner ear must be investigated. There is a nerve (vestibulocochlear nerve) which arises in the brain and supplies the inner ear. Any stimulation of this nerve along its path can cause severe dizziness. You may consult an ENT surgeon and they will put you through tests to check the vestibular apparatus in your inner ear.

Sometimes, dizziness spells can also be due to partial complex seizures, this may not be apparent but you may have to give a detail of the complete sequence of events experienced by you. This can be discussed with a neurophysician or psychiatrist if there is no significant pathology in your inner ear.

Hope this helps.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi,

Dizziness is a commonly reported symptom that can have many causes. Some patients describe light headedness as dizziness and some experience spinning of one's head or surrounding. Common causes include low blood pressure, low blood sugar or problems in the inner ear, stress, migraine, dehydration, side effects of drugs etc.

If the symptoms are experienced even in lying down position then the cause is likely to be a problem in the ear. Consult a ENT surgeon in that case.

If all your tests are normal and no treatment seems to be helping you, it is possible that an anxiety or depression related problem exists in which case a psychiatrist can help you out.

Hope this helps,
Dr A Rao
