How Can Irregular Periods With Intermittent Heavy Bleeding Be Treated?

I'm a healthy 37 years old and ever since I had my last son 6.7 years ago my period has never been the same. There's been times where I won't get my period for 1-3 months and other months that I do get it, it last for two-three weeks and a very heavy flow. I've already talked to my doctor about it when this first stared happening and she can't think of why, other than my body is changing. She said that everything would go back to normal the first years after having my son, but like I said, it's already been almost 7 years. I saw my old OBGYN years back regarding this too and he ran test and then told me the same thing as my doctor. I haven't seen a doctor in over 2 years. Could this be the beginning of menopause? My mom stopped getting her period when she was 45.
