How Can One Confirm The Presence Of Atopic Dermatitis?
My six week old daughter had a case of baby acne on her face which turned into dry scale-like flaky skin. After flaking off, it left light patches almost completely covering both her cheeks and chin. She was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis by my dermatologist who practices old school dermatology. The dermatologist prescribed Betamethasone Valerate USP 0.1% cream (every 1 to 2 hours the first 2 days then 3 times daily), Nizoral Ketoconazole 2% shampoo (once a day), and Borax bath (1/4 cup in bath once a day). Do the symptoms sound like Atopic Dermatitis? And is this treatment appropriate for an infant? Also after researching Borax I found out that it was fatal to children and infants and no longer used in medicine, Is this information on Borax accurate?

Atopic dermatitis is diagnosed clinically most of the times.
It may have association with other allergic illness like asthma, there may be family history of some allergy.
As you said child is 6 weeks old, long term use of steroid is not recommended for mild cases. Antifungel ketoconazole has no role in atopic dermatitis
You can simply use some moisturizer containing aloe vera, like aloederm lotion or atopia lotion is also having good results.
