How Do I Stop A Child From Eating Rocks On The Playground?

A friend has a 7 year old who eats rocks from the playground, she has been known to eat just about anything including the inside parts of highlighters, 120 gummie vitamins etc. I am a pedi nurse but this has me stumped. I don t know how to direct her or who the child should she. There is no diagnosis at autism, but I suspect asp ethers due to her other sensory issues.

This eating habit is called pica. The most common cause for this in a child of normal mentation is a deficiency of hemoglobin or iron in the body. Get a hemoglobin test done and if there is deficiency then start an iron supplement in consultation with your doctor. If she is not of normal mentation, then also such a habit can result and in that case you should consult a neurologist. Autism rarely if ever results in such habits.
