How Does An Insulin Suppressor Assist In Conceiving?

I do not have any type of diabetes. I am aged 35 and have a weight of 93 kgs. All my reports are normal except high BP since the last month in range of 100/150. We are planning for our second baby. My Gynaec has asked me to start on Glycomet for a month initially once a day and after the initial week twice a day. In what way will insulin suppression assist me in conceiving? Thank you Dr Aarti Abraham and Dr. Dr. Rhea Chanda. I am replying here itself as I cannot see a reply button to discuss with you. I would like to rephrase that I am not diagnosed with PCOS, all my reports are normal, I have normal ovulation (in fact excellent and regular which is not expected for my weight/age as per the dr.) and my hormone reports are normal. The semen reports for my husband are also normal. My endometerium thickness is very good and last two months follicular growth were 18 mm and 20 mm respectively. The only cause of alarm from my medical tests was a high BP (in range of 100/150) but everything in hypertension profile is within limits. I had conceived naturally (without any medicines) 6 years back and then too my weight was 91kgs. I have always been a heavy-weighted person without it being so apparent in my physical appearance. Is it ok to have glycomet without PCOS, fallopian blockages, ovulation problems and insulin problems. What are the side effects of the same in the long run? I am prescribed Folic Acid and Oosure tablets by my gynaec and half a tablet for BP by our family physician. I climb 13 floors regularly and play an hour of badminton daily. I am generally very sensitive to medicines and get migraines if any medicine does not agree with me.

Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise and sharing your diagnosis with me.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
I think you would be having PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome.
This is also characterized by associated insulin resistance.
That could be the reason behind your weight gain also.
Glycomet contains Metformin.
This is an insulin desensitizer.
It helps to regulate insulin metabolism, thereby helping you to lose weight.
Of course, alongwith Metformin, you should be dieting and exercising regularly also, to aid in weight loss.
metformin will regulate all attendant hormonal imbalances alongwith insulin regulation.
That is how it helps in weight loss, and thus aids conception and fertility.
Also, other parameters for fertility should be assessed.
Your partner's semen analysis should be tested.
Your ovulation should be tracked by serial ultrasound scans.
Laparoscopy to check patency of fallopian tubes is a must.
Take regular folic acid supplements, and aim to achieve a healthy BMI.
All the best
Take care.

Hi,
Insulin suppresants are given usually in polycystic ovaries to help in regularising cycles. You are over weight, hence the suppreasnts have been given to you. But you need ovulation induction drugs also if you have been diagnosed as pcos.
