How Is Lopressor Useful On A Prn Basis?

Hello, Dr.Grief My name is Josephine. I am 51 y/o female. I would like to know how is lopresser useful on a prn basis when symtoms of palpitations occur and is this a common way to use this medication. my cardiologist indicated lopressor after a 24 hr holter monitor showed pvc while asleep, my chief complaint was palpitaitons at rest mostly at night, no chest pain. I am hasitating to take this medication due to all the side effects it has, specially when the palpiations were said to be insignificant. I have made some life style modification such as exercise, eating better and healthier, taking vitamins, omega 3 in hope that this may help. looking foward to you feedback, thank you

Hi Josephine,
You have a diagnosis of pvc/pvb ( premature ventricular contractions or beats). You are having symptoms that is the palpitations.
Usually asymptomatic pvc doesn't warrant any medications but as you are symptomatic, your cardiologist might have put you on lopressor (metoprolol). I wouldn't recommend my patients to take lopressor on PRN basis as it won't do any good.
And if there is any structural heart disease like ventricular hypertrophy, then lopressor would certainly be required. Your history doesn't have any mention of the presence or absence of associated conditions.
You can discuss the above points with your cardiologist and take a call on lopressor. Hope this helps. Thanks.
