How Long Should Thyroxine Be Taken For Hypothyroidism?

I have been detected by hypothyroid in 2006 since then i am on medicine thyroxin 100 mg. Its been now 3 years my thyroid levels has down (TSH T3 and T4) still my physician have not stopped medicines. I quite confused about long term meditation so i have stopped taking medicines for last one month i haven't found any increase in my weight. How long i should wait to see whether it affects? If doesn't make any side effects so can i stop taking medicines?

Good day,
Noted your concern. Hypothyroidism can be temporary or permanent. In most cases, it is permanent. Since you have stopped the medicine, wait for 6 weeks from the day of stopping and test a Free T4, TSH and ANti TPO test. If the TSH is elevated and low Ft4, you must restart the medicine and probably you will need it life long. If the Anti TPO is positive, that will tell that, hypothyroidism is due to autoimmunity and even in this case, you may need life long mediciations.
Weight alone is not a criteria to start or stop thyroid medications. Please do not give importance to weight alone when dealing with hypothyroidism
