How Should Headaches Post Head Injury With Concussion Be Treated?
Hi my 14-year old son fell and hit the back of his head 3 months ago and had a concussion. He had a concussion 2 years ago (in which symptoms only last a few days). He had a CT scan and an MRI and both were normal. The neurologist said he has post concussion syndrome and it will take rest and time. He was taking Motrin every day and it stopped working and now he is one week without Motrin and his headaches are worsening. Is this rebound headaches? How long should this take to go away? He also suffers from anxiety. Also, is it safe for him to fly and go on a preplanned trip to Disney in 2 weeks -- and safe to go on rides at Disney? Thank you
Regarding your concern, I would explain that his symptoms are related to a chronic benign type of headache, as his brain CT scan and MRI have resulted normal.
This is not rebound headache, just a primary type of headache.
Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with a neurologist and discussing the possibility of starting a preventive therapy which will help reduce the severity and frequency of headache attacks. An antidepressant (amytriptiline, sertraline, venlafaxine, etc.) would help in this regard.
Hope to have been helpful!
Kind regards, Dr. Aida
