Dietitian & Nutritionist 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms that you describe are consistent with the side-effects from taking Prednisone. It would have been helpful if someone could have counselled you on the drug- nutrient effects to expect prior to gaining the weight.

Research points to the many successes of a Very Low Carbohydrate Diet(VLCD) to lose weight associated with a cortisone based weight gain. Of course, this should be combined with exercise and any appropriate nutrient repletion (such as vitamin D) and maintenance intake (multivitamin) associated with a low calorie diet.

Such a regimen should optimally be administered and supervised by a Registered Dietitian who is best trained for this treatment. Also, water retention is common with Prednisone so keeping your sodium less than 2300mg per day might help lose edema.

In the future when treated with Prednisone, avoid all added sugars and restrict refined carbohydrates and sodium while taking the medication and keep lean proteins high. Yes, you can get rid of the moon face and lose that weight.

I wish you luck in reversing the weight and fluid gain. Seek out appropriate support and start a program to meet your goal and success will be yours.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Kathy Shattler
