Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother was recently placed in a medically induced coma. The doctors then took him off of all medications hoping that he would wake up. Three days have went by and he still has not woke up. He is a cancer patient and is in stage four. Why has he not woke up?
The fact remains that the patient is put in a medically induced come if the functions have deteriorated too much, usually for ventilatory support.
The fact also remains that the anesthetic agents used for this take time to wear off. So that too is a factor.
The other possibility is that the levels of other metabolites has deteriorated enough to cause problems and they themselves cause unconcious state.
In stage 4 cancer, there is a possibility that the cancer may have spread to the brain. This can be confirmed by neuroradioimaging.
I would suggest, be patient. Sometimes the patients do take time to wake after withdrawal of medicines. And talk to the treating doctor. The treating team can best tell you about the other possible conditions that your brother is currently facing which may contribute to prolonged coma
Best of luck Feel free to ask a follow up query
