How Will Lifting Of Weight Effect Osteophytes In Neck?
Part of a personal care assistant s job is to lift an individual in and out of his wheelchair to bed/bath/toilet approx 7 times over a two hour shift. The individual being lifted weighs 70 pounds. The assistant has just been told he has an osteophyte in his neck. Will this lifting make matters worse eg. create more osteophytes, make existing one larger? Thank you so much. Tim
This lifting may lead to a bulging disc in the cervical or lumbar vertebral column. It will not make the osteophytes worse, but it may lead to disc herniation. For the osteophytes, I would recommend regular physical exercise and physiotherapy.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
