Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My doctor wants me to take allopurinol for gouty arthritis. Last time we tried this my attacks were the worst I have ever had. He wants me to start again at a lower dose but I am still apprehensive about taking it. The new starting dose will be at 50 mg for two weeks and increasing by 50 mg every two weeks until I reach 200 mg. He wouldn't prescribe anything for the pain that will ensue with allopurinol initiation. Any ideas?
You may take tramadol100mg twice or thrice for pain, fomentation etc.I would suggest that colchicine in higher dose 0.6mg be used4 hourly if new attck is there /or comes or longer term lower dose colchicine 0.5mg once daily to check inflammation prevention. However, if your doctor is an rheumatologist by qualification , he may be for allopurinol due to your other systemic (cardiac, kidney liver status) conditions and as per findings on clinical signs and symptoms of gout, general condition of your physical state- so you may follow him/her with full trust
Hello, I can not accept this treatment. You should always be treated for pain when you are receiving uric acid lowering drug. So I would recommend you to take tablet Brufen 400 mg daily. If pain is not controlled with one tablet than you can take up to three to four tablet. Once your pain is under control than you can slowly decrease doses of the medicine. I hope this answer will be helpful for you.Let me know if there is any other followup questions. thanks
