Is Celiac Disease Hereditary?

My Mom has celiac disease and apparently it can run in the family, her Dad has it and so does my Mom s aunty - I ve been tested before but it came back as me not having the illness but as I have gotten older I feel that I have become more like my Mom and getting some symptoms, is it possible that celiac disease can develop over time or should I over look this and not get retested?

Hello
thanks for using health care magic

For sure celiac disease occurs in people of all ages who are genetically predisposed to having the disease. In celiac disease, the body produces antibodies against a give protein called gluten that resembles some cells of the body. thus, these antibodies as they target the proteins, body cells (intestinal lining cells) are not left out.

The antibodies are produced following sensitisation and the precise time of sensitisation varies from individual to individual, thus you might have been tested at a time, you had not developed the antibodies.

I will recommend you do testing again to be sure of the real situation.
Best regards
Dr Achuo
