Is Cystic Acne A Cause Of Apnea ? What Are The Available Treatments?

I had a head injury several years ago. Almost immediately my skin started to break out terribly and after six years of anxiety depression and other problems, I was diagnosed with central sleep apnea. My face and skin though which was also diagnosed by a dermatologist as cystic acne still is such a problem. I am 47 years old and it is just very upsetting. I know that both the apnea and skin problems happened suddenly and at the same time. I just have no idea how to help my skin.

Hi,

I can understand your concern for the pimples a in yourself. Acne or pimples are youth related problem and is not a disease per say. I can understand your concern of acne or pimples at the age of 47 years.

Your can apply a cream contains Clindamycin gel 1% and adapalene for topical application form. For clindamycin there is no harm in using it but adapalene can cause irritation if not used under dermatological supervision. It contains topical antibiotic gel and oral antibiotic and do not cause any side effects.

Take a proper guidance and follow up with a good dermatologist so that all the problem of acne can be dealt best for future time.

There is no correlation of apnea with skin problem so do not correlate one with the other. You need proper treatment of both acne and apnea according to its specialized care.

Take care

Dermatologist Dr. Geetika Paul's  Response
Hi

Cystic acne is not actually related to sleep apnea.
See you had a head injury years back.
I would like to tell you that the medicines which are started in patients with head injury especially drugs like phenytoin are important cause for the development of acne lesions.
Also steroids are another important cause for such lesions.
I would like you to see if you are on any such drugs which could have lead to development of acne lesions.
