Is Glucose Via IV Is Required In Typhoid Fever?

Hi Doctor..my brother is down with Typhoid and my family doctor has suggested intake of Glucose (not oral but via IV). Is Glucose required? please suggest the role it will play in improving the health. Also what kind of diet would you suggest. I would also like to confirm if Typhoid would be a recurring fever for long duration of time as he has constantly been down with fever in the recent past.

Hello
There is a misconception that in typhoid fever only boiled or hot things should be given diet . This is misconception and myth .
One more thing in rural area that Intravenous drip or glucose ( as you mentioned in your query )is a cold thing or cold remedy .
Let me explain that intravenous drip contains glucose, ( dextrose ) in various strength, saline , mix , elctrolyte-M , invert sugar , plasma expander etc.
This type of fluid is given for many purposes as when doctor don't want oral medicine ( for fear of vomiting etc).
Typhoid ( as you mentioned ) is an intestinal disease and water born infection caused by Salmonella A B AH OH ( four strain).
So Get in blood examination for Widal test ( typhoid confirmation test ) , serology test for typhoid fever.
If your treating doctor advised Intravenous fluid ( glucose ) get it at once .
Complete treatment is important in this fever.Usually the course of typhoid is 5 days ( now a latest treatment ) while it is 14 days - 28 days according to antibiotics used.
