Is It Necessary To Go For Chest Xray For My Child Suffering Chesty Cough With Phlegm In Her Chest?

Hi Dr,

My 6 year old daughter is having phlegm in her chest. She does not have fever or any blood coming out when coughing. She just has a heavy chesty cough. Is it too early to get a chest x ray, I'm cautious about taking x rays unnecessarily as I heard there is a little risk involved.

Kind regards,

Harsha

Pediatrician 's  Response
In most cases, making the correct diagnosis in a 6 year old child with cough can be done without the aid of an x-ray. An experienced pediatrician will most often be able to make the diagnosis with a thorough history and physical exam. I recommend consulting with your pediatrician so that the correct diagnosis can be made, and the appropriate treatment plan prescribed.
