Is It Necessary To Have The Foreign Object Removed If It Has No Symptoms Of Discomfort Or Pain?
Hi my 3 year old swallowed a quarter 3 weeks ago. Xrays have been taken to confirm the stomach location. I check her stool with no change. How long should I wait to take her back for check up? Is it necessary to have the foreign object removed if she has no symptoms of discomfort or pain?
Hi, She is most likely to eventually pass the coin in her stool. This may take a few days more. It is unlikely to cause any problems if left. I suggest you wait for 1 week. If you have not recovered the quarter then see your doctor who may recommend a further x-ray to confirm it's position. Encourage your child to eat plenty of fruit or veg and drink fluids to encourage bowel movements which will help move the quarter through the intestine. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB FRCA
