Is There Anything To Fall Asleep Easier After Suffering Recurrent Concussion ?
Hello, my 16yo daughter suffered a concussion in late October during an elite sport practice and had a constant headache for 3 weeks but did fully recover. Unfortunately 4 weeks after her full recovery she sustained what seemed a minor elbow to the head which caused an immediate headache - thus concussion #2. This was 2 weeks ago and she still has a headache but the severity is lessening. What is worse for her this time that she did not have the first time is a problem sleeping. It will take her up to 3+hrs to fall asleep. She states her best sleep is after 7am. She does not nap nor feel the need to nap during the day and although she reports feeling very tired when she first gets up between 10-11am she does not seem sleep deprived. Is there anything she can do to fall asleep easier?
In my opinioin, you should not worry. She is just sleeping late and getting up late. It is possible that once she started sleeping late for some reason after the concussion, her sleep cycle became delayed. She may temporarily use Melatonin to fall asleep early. She can try getting up at the desired time and staying in bright light for a few hours after getting up. Avoid day time naps. She should avoid tea/coffee etc in the evening and TV/computer/mobile use late at night.
