Knee Surgery Done. Started Fever, Shivering, And Swelling At Fracture Point. What's Going On?
at my right leg belwo the knee due to fracture , underwent surgery in Jan 18, 2010., no problem for the past 2 years 11 months. a few days back, there is fever and body shivering . taken antibiotic., now the fever and shivering stopped; now there is a swelling at the top of the operation point., and also there is swelling sidewise; there is foreign body ( metal plate and screw) at the fracture point: whether the swelling is due to the infection or any infection at the place?
hello,
late post surgical infections can be due to lodging of bacteria on the plates and screws from the infective focus else where on the body like sore throat, cellulitis or chest infections. also some times the dormant bacteria which are lodged during surgery gets activated once the body immunity gets low due to any cause. in your case both may be the cause. consult your surgeon. also after 3 years one can safely remove the plate because the bone has consolidated till then.
take care.
